Result
The highlights of Fojo Media Institute for the SEAMTN project in 2020 focused on the remaining year-4 activities before closure by 30 November 2021. Partners’ activities included: Vietnamese Journalism Training Center (VJTC) hosted reviewing the 20- journalism course(s) out of their current curricula, using for the center’s journalism trainings. National Digital Archive Centre for Digital Communication (NDACDC) conducted two trainings on reporting sexual harassment. More than 35 journalists from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City joined the trainings. Myanmar Journalism Institute (MJI) is working on the training module—"Reporting Through the Gender-lens”. The module (both in English and Burmese) will be published in soft-copies before the end of the project. Cambodia Center for Independent Journalism (CCIM) is also working on the training module—"Reporting Through the Gender-lens”, after the long wait of removal on travel ban because of the Covid-19. The module in English will be published in soft-copies before the end of the project. Publications on Journalism Materials: Book launching – “Journalism, Fake News, and Disinformation: A Handbook for Journalism Education and Training” (Khmer Language). The original content is produced by UNESCO (Paris). Fojo joins the collaboration with UNESCO-Phnom Penh, and contributed for the translation, and participated in the launch held in July, 2020. Book launching – “Guide Book in Handling Sexual Harassment for Media Houses” (Vietnamese Language). The original content is produced by WAN-IFRA. Fojo contributed the translation of Vietnamese Language upon the request of the Vietnamese partner NDACDC. Fojo launched “Online Journalism and Storytelling: A Learning and Training Kit”, in English, Burmese/Myanmar, and Vietnamese. Social Media Campaigns: From 28-30 Sept, 2020, SEAMTN launched a 3-day social media campaign on the Access to Information (A2I). Fojo gathers voices of 28 journalists/media practitioners/free expression activists and other relevant stakeholders from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV). Out of 28, 15 voices are from women. On 25 Nov, Fojo joined the global voices calling attention for the “Elimination of Gender-based Violence” towards women and all other gender-orientations. The online campaign hosts the messages of 42 concerned-individuals of 24 women, 14 men, and 4 other gender-identities from Cambodia (19), Myanmar (21) and Vietnam (2). Among them, 21 are journalists and media trainers. News on Fojo Media Institute: In 2020, the project team produced 19 featured articles on fojo.se – Journalists’ Struggle during the 1st Wave of Covid-19 Journalists and Joblessness during the 2nd Wave of Covid-19 Media Training Institutes’ Preparedness for the Covid-19 Pandemic Need Assessment Survey on Covid-19 and CLMV Gender mainstreaming plan(s) of partner in Cambodia “Reporting on Sexual Harassment” Course in Vietnam Courses Overhauling for the Vietnam’s leading training center State of Access to Information (A2I) in Cambodia and Vietnam Impunity against Journalists in Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam Eliminating Gender-Based Violence in Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam Election: The Right to Reporting Election: Gender Glass Ceiling in Myanmar For Journalism Handbooks: Vietnam: Book launch of “Guidebook in Handling Sexual Harassment for Media Houses: the trailblazer” in Vietnamese Language Regional: Soft-copy book launch of “Online Journalism and Storytelling: A Training and Learning Kit” The end results will be attained by the final report of 30 November 2021.
The overall goal is to contribute to a professional and independent media sector in Southeast Asia by establishing a regional network of journalism training institutions supporting media freedom, freedom of expression and the right to information. The specific objective is to strengthen the capacity of mid-career journalism training institutes in a regional network covering initially Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CLMV countries).
