More than 15 thematic community trainings performed, targeting about 3000 participants (48% women), including conservation agriculture, beekeeping, horticulture, ecosystem management and restoration, conservation finance. - gender sensitive and responsible Community resources Use and Resilience (CRURAPs) developed, containing adaptation activities and actions to improve diversification of livelihoods, ecosystems goods and services and natural resources, self-organization and adaptive governance and capacities and to make informed decisions. - support to 10 local CBOs to develop and implement actions plans for the improvement of group governance and leadership. - registration of about 1 000 fishers of which over 300 issued with ID cards. Over 14 CBOs registered and demonstrating a positive improvement in governance and financial management and accountability. - alternative livelihood initiatives developed through implementation of 17 community projects on conservation agriculture, bee keeping and fisheries value chains, benefiting over 2000 people. - the undertaking of ecosystem baseline assessment, including a detailed mangrove assessment and mapping in Dondo district. - the restoration of 50 ha of mangroves in Dondo and Memba districts and other 3 777 ha of mangroves identified and mapped as protection zone, to improve management. - 7 community marine reserves or Managed AccessReserves established, covering 897 km2 (of which 151,73 km2 as no-take reserves), function as protected areas, especially for coral reefs and sea grass beds. - support to the revision of Maritime Fishery Regulation (REPMAR) Decree 89/2020, empowering community-based fisheries management while paving the way for healthier ocean ecosystems. - support to IIP/MIMAIP to develop the National Mangrove Management Strategy (approved 2020), to combat and reverse the situation of degradation and destruction of the mangrove ecosystems. - establishing partnerships to also influence other legislation such as the Regulation for the management and planning of coastal zones and beaches, and the National Marine Spatial Plan (POEM). - support to the Fisheries Research Institute (IIP) to undertake scientific research of fisheries in Mozambican waters to ensure sustainable fish stocks.
The overarching goal of the program was to "Strengthen and restore the value of coastal and marine ecosystem goods and services to improve social, economic and ecological resilience to climate change", with the objective to enhance the adaptive capacities of men and women from local coastal communities, local and national authorities to work together to sustainably govern and manage their natural resource base. Overall, the Programme was designed to deliver against four main outcomes: 1) Community social resilience: Coastal community social systems are better able to cope with the impacts and shocks of climate change by: i) self-organizing and engaging in equitable and gender-responsive governance and management of their natural resource base; and ii) practicing active local level learning and adaptation based on experiences and new knowledge. 2) Economic resilience: Local coastal community economics are strengthened and able to minimize or reduce welfare losses due to climate change stressors, shocks and disasters through: i) improvements in and diversification of livelihoods [of women and men]; ii) increases in fisheries and agricultural efficiencies; and iii) specific, nature-based market interventions driven by value chain analyses. 3) Ecological resilience: The integrity and ecological health of coastal and marine ecosystems and habitats is improved and/or maintained to enable social-ecological systems to better absorb and withstand climate change stressors and shocks. 4) Institutional strengthening: Institutional frameworks, including policies/legislation as well as local organizational capacities, strengthened to better enable and support evidence-based decision making, adaptation action and ensure social and ecological resilience of marine and coastal systems.
