The establishment of the Environmental Economics Institute for the Lower Mekong Subregion (EEI-LMS) at Khon Kaen University (Thailand) is a result of the EEPSEA contribution. By the end of the contribution, EEI-LMS has 223 members from Thailand (125), Lao PDR (16), Myanmar (49) and Cambodia (33). Swedish support facilitated the further development of the Environmental Economics Group - Philippines (EEG-Ph). During 2023 the EEG-Ph revised is vision statement to reflect the strategic shift of its focus from individual research to capacity building amongst academic, government and private sector stakeholders. EEPSEA's small research grants programme elicited 86 applications resulting in 22 funded projects (8 women, 14 men) in Lao PDR (4), Cambodia (7) and Myanmar (11) during the lifetime of the agreement, with 20 projects completed. EEPSEA awarded seven transdisciplinary research proposal development grants during the lifetime of the contribution. Grants covered areas including indigenous knowledge, water and agriculture, coral reef sustainability, water-related disaster, biodiversity, marine fisheries, and aquaculture. EEPSEA's seed grant initiative was intended to create opportunities for transdisciplinary projects, including environmental economics, that would contribute solutions to complex environmental challenges. The results of this programme component were limited. EEPSEA contributed to the development of Vietnam's new Environmental Protection Law and the National Action Plan on Circular Economy. These policy impacts were possible due to the trust that policymakers placed in EEPSEA as a credible and reliable organization. During September 2023 EEPSEA held a 2-day training workshop on "Measurement and Implementation of Circular Economy in Southeast Asia" at the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Organized for 33 researchers (19 women, 14 men) from Southeast Asian nations, the workshop deepened their understanding of circular economy principles and enhance their skills in quantifying and implementing circular economy strategies effectively. A participant from Thailand's Circular Economy Task Force reflected afterwards that "this workshop enhanced my expertise in quantifying the circular transition. The knowledge will be invaluable as we fine-tune Thailand's national circular economy action plan." A participant from Vietnam's Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment explained that "the methodologies and measurement frameworks covered will allow us to develop a more robust, scientifically-grounded circular economy strategy with clear targets and monitoring mechanisms for Vietnam." Most participants were also presenters at the 2023 International Conference on Economics, Law and Government, which focused on accelerating inclusive green transitions in Developing Countries hosted by the University of Economics directly after the EEPSEA workshop. A senior environmental economist from Jönköping University, Sweden contributed to the training as a resource person.
As a regional platform for environmental economics and transdisciplinary research, EEPSEA Partnership will contribute to addressing and finding solutions to complex environmental challenges, while being especially sensitive to the needs of the poor in order to support a development that is greener, cleaner and inclusive.
