During the project period, HEARD has delivered results in the following areas i) conducting and disseminating interdisciplinary research on HIV and AIDS, ii) public health education and training, iii) creating and leading a robust network of partners and iv) provide evidence driven technical assistance to support governments to address critical health priorities. In total 85 research projects were undertaken, both commissioned work and HEARD initiated research projects. In terms of publications, which is a key output for research organizations, HEARD published 206 journal articles, books and book chapters. In addition 44 briefs (policy/meeting), 24 research reports and 3 manuals and toolkits. During the project period, HEARD has established a scholarship PhD programme with regional uptake, one of the few of its kind on the continent. 29 scholarships have been awarded and 18 students have been awarded their doctorate degree so far. Students from 15 different countries have received scholarships. In order to remain relevant to the regional health agenda, HEARD has repositioned itself over the last few years. This has included broadening its focus from HIV/AIDS to include other pressing health challenges within sexual and reproductive health.
