UNFPA Maternal Health Thematic Fund (MHTF) provides catalytic financial support in selected countries with high maternal mortality, it develops and shares global public goods, conducts capacity-building activities, normative policy work and technical guidance in maternal health and SRHR at global, national and regional levels. The fund has 25 countries in focus but do also provide technical support for a further 19 countries. Some results from 2022: • 2.4 million pregnant women received safer maternity care during the year and a total of 28 million women have received support since the fund was established in 2008. • Support for basic training and further training of nearly 84,000 midwives, which means that a total of 350,000 midwives have been trained since the start.

Result
The long term impact of the MHTF is to fulfil the rights of every women, adolescent girls and newborn to equitable and accountable access to quality maternal and newborn health in the context of comprehensive SRHR, without discrimination. The following three Goals are to be achieved: 1. Commitments: Increased political commitment & sustainable financing towards SRHR/MNH in the MHTF countries and at regional and global level 2. Care and services: Improved access to quality SRHR/MNH services in the context of strengthened, more resilient and integrated health systems 3. Communities: Increased integration of SRHR/MNH health into community health and accountability systems Through the following six Outcomes: 1. An enabling policy and financial environment: engage in aligned support and dialogue on policy and financing to advance universal coverage of SRHR, and on integration of MNH/SRHR. (Result 1) 2. Quality of MNH services: support the delivery of quality MNH services (ANC, childbirth, PNC, EmONC, obstetric fistula and other morbidities prevention and treatment, essential newborn care, comprehensive abortion care) as part of a comprehensive package of SRHR services. (Result 2) 3. Promote and strengthen midwifery and other human resources: to deliver integrated, respectful, quality SRH services (Result 2) 4. MNH commodities uptake: increase health systems readiness to ensure availability of the full range of quality-assured maternal and newborn health commodities and supplies (Result 2) 5. Community engagement and empowerment of women and girls: Engaging communities to support linkages between health facilities and communities for referrals, MH promotion, WASH, identification of danger signs, demand of quality services, integration of fistula survivors and supporting adolescent girls and women as agents of change in accessing rights-based, person-centered MNH services (Result 3) 6. Maternal and newborn health data and research: strengthen systems for analysing and using maternal health data, monitoring provision of MNH care, and addressing causes of maternal deaths through MPDSR programmes and support implementation research in MNH.
