Although the project has initiated its activity in November 2023, since its inception, the Tekove Program (Tekove means Life in guarani) has achieved significant progress in the implementation of strategic activities. In terms of conservation, continuous efforts have been made to lay the necessary foundations to contribute to conservation and protection at the landscape scale, and find the balance between production and development, with the conservation of biodiversity, indigenous peoples and peasants in vulnerable situations. The participation of civil society and beneficiary communities has been fundamental in this initial stage, where a commitment of all the stakeholders has been shown. Through training and empowerment programs, local capacity has been strengthened in sustainable management techniques and adaptation to climate change. This has cultivated relationships of trust and collaboration between local actors, improving natural resource management and strengthening resilience in the face of natural disasters. Likewise, progress was made in consolidating alliances and commitments with actors in the productive sector, both in livestock and beekeeping, seeking that productive models can move from traditional management to sustainable management, taking as the main foundation the protection of forests and our natural heritage in general. The main results per component are as follow: Component 1: conservation, risk management and climate change - Implementation of the Strategic Plan for Comprehensive Fire Management in the Greater Chaco Pantanal Landscape through activities focused on the prevention, control, and combat of forest fires (early stages of the implementation. It is important to mention that this initiative is carried out along with FAN). - 40 Park Ranger of the protected areas of the great Chaco - Pantanal landscape have strengthened their capacities in prevention of forest fires. - Institutional support to the protected areas of the great Chaco - Pantanal landscape to provide the minimum necessary conditions to guarantee control and surveillance in the territory as well as advancing in the implementation of their management plans. - The Departmental Government of Tarija has a Climate Change Departmental Policy designed and approved. It is pending its implementation. Component 2: Producing while conserving. - Creation of the Chaco Livestock Coordinating Round Table with 17 associations from the Chaco region with the aim of promoting sustainable livestock farming in the region, taking into account the climate and environmental vulnerability in the region. - 20 Livestock Producers from Chaco have joined the project with the commitment to apply and promote sustainability criteria in the region and promote the transition from traditional livestock farming to sustainable livestock farming. - 46 beekeepers from 4 associations have been trained in autumn management and personalized monitoring of varroa, improving skills and knowledge in critical situations regarding climate issues and water deficit. - 42 veterinary doctors from SENASAG trained in preventive beekeeping health, strengthening institutional capacity in health management in the sector. - Promotion of the recovery of ecosystems and improvement of habitat for pollinators through reforestation with native species in strategic bee production sites such as Cutaiqui and cotton fields. - A bee health campaign carried out in coordination with SENASAG, Villamontes and Yacuiba Municipalities and the federation of beekeepers. - Relaunch of the Alma de Montes brand to promote products from the Chaco forest Component 3: Capacity building - Design of a diploma in sustainable livestock farming - Women responsible for NANNUM centers (Connected women) in 4 communities in Villa Montes and Yacuiba have been trained in the topic of digital skills. Component 4: networks, platforms, and strategic communication An inter-institutional agreement has been signed with the Gran Chaco Foundation Argentina with the objective of joining forces and replicating successful models
The current intervention aims to contribute to the conservation of the Great Landscape in Bolivia. This will be done by i) strengthening institutional capacities for the comprehensive management of natural risks and the effects of climate change, ii) favouring sustainable living systems towards a comprehensive economy that promotes the generation and commercialization of products free of deforestation, iii) promoting the active participation of vulnerable groups such as women, indigenous people and peasant communities. To achieve this task, four specific objectives have been established: - To strengthen institutional and organizational capacities for the conservation of the Great Landscape, through the management of natural and anthropogenic risks and the effects of climate change with emphasis on the comprehensive management of fire as the main threat, heritage management natural resources, connectivity and water security - To promote the implementation and development of sustainable production chains that improve and ensure the livelihoods of local populations, communities and indigenous peoples through good practices, innovations and added value; promoting the production, promotion and marketing of deforestation-free products compatible with conservation and adaptation to climate change. - To generate processes of consultation, training, research, permanent technical and technological innovation, promoting the participation of women, indigenous peoples and peasants in decision-making that contribute to good environmental governance and territorial management. - To strengthen multi-stakeholder networks in the Chaco - Pantanal region, as coordination bodies at the national and international level, enhancing the impact of actions in the territory, on topics such as: the conservation of natural heritage, sustainable production and resilience to climate change. At the end of the intervention, it is expected that: -9M Ha will be in better conditions of protection, connectivity and conservation; with local/departmental governments and protected area managers strengthened and effectively managing their territories to reduce risks from forest fires implementing policies and strategies for adaptation to climate change, generating conditions of resilience at the local level and enhancing access to climate financing. - At least 100,000 Ha will be under good productive practices with a focus on environmental sustainability that prevent deforestation and forest degradation, and contribute to the valuation of natural heritage and its environmental functions, with better conditions of food security, family economy and climate resilience. - At least 1000 Women, youth, technicians, indigenous peoples and farmers of the Chaco - Pantanal landscape are empowered and have better technical and technological training - At least 3 regional collaborative alliances that promote a joint agenda that guides interventions in the territory with a focus on conservation, sustainability and climate resilience have been strengthened.
