Result
Examples of results from 2023 include: - WANEP provided and facilitated support for eight of the ECOWAS National Coordination Centres for early warning and Response Mechanism (NCCRM) in Cote dIvoire, Burkina Faso, Mali, Liberia, Guinea Bissau, Ghana, Sierra Leone and The Gambia. These supports have led to the design and implementation of response actions by the NCCRMs and contributed to relative peace in those countries. The support covered provision of training, information sharing, joint analysis, gender mainstreaming and mentoring. - On climate change, a Climate Change Resilience and a Vulnerability Tracking tool has been developed to enable strengthen skills of affected coastal communities in West Africa to monitor, provide data and inform analysis and reporting to support community response, as well as policy on climate change and adaptation. Targeted countries in the initial phases are Nigeria, Togo and Senegal with a broader focus on linking it to the regional Early Warning Mechanism of ECOWAS and the ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework. - Within the reporting period, WANEP produced and disseminated a total of 22,311 Early Warning products. - WANEP working through the National Secretariats, provided various forms of support to 750 member organisations of WANEP and 40 other CSOs across West Africa to strengthen both their institutional and programmatic capacities. - WANEP mobilised and established eight Women Advocacy Platforms in Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, Ghana, Cote dIvoire, Benin and Togo. These platforms are currently designing and implementing gender sensitive programmes and response actions based on the pillars of UNSCR 1325 in their countries. In Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and Cote dIvoire, WANEP has engaged the platforms to coordinate a Womens Influencers platform which is aimed at providing a frequently updated data on women at the forefront of the WPS agenda for the engagement of stakeholders in and outside the region. - WANEP, through its Youth Peace and Security programme, established a Youth4Peace Network in Senegal, bringing the total number of networks established by WANEP since 2021 to 13. The other Networks are in Cote dIvoire Benin, Ghana, Nigeria, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau and Sierra Leone. - WANEP continues to provide technical support to four National architecture for Peace in Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Cote dIvoire. At the local level, WANEP through its national networks has provided support to 107 local level architecture in Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia, Benin, Togo, Liberia, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso, within the period. - WANEP, in its broader conflict prevention and specifically under its EMAM initiative, established three platforms in Liberia, Guinea Bissau, and Sierra Leone within the reporting period. The platforms called National Election Response Group (NERG) were established to contribute to mitigating election related violence.
WANEP’s new strategic plan 2021-2025 has as its overall goal to build the capacity of citizens, civil society, citizen groups, research institutions, ECOWAS, AU, and all relevant stakeholders towards ensuring: “An enhanced citizens and state capacity for sustainable peace and development in ECOWAS region and in support of the Africa Peace and Security Architecture (APSA)”. To achieve this overall goal, WANEP had chosen the following six strategic objectives it will be pursuing in the next five years: - Strategic Objective 1: To enhance the use of early warning in support of response initiatives - Strategic Objective 2: To strengthen women and girls’ capacity for policy influencing and provide dialogue spaces for their meaningful contribution to addressing emerging peace and security issues - Strategic Objective 3: To broaden the Peace Education programmes and support youth participation and voice in issues of governance, peace and security - Strategic Objective 4: To expand community resilience, and build the capacity of institutions to perform their mandate effectively in human security - Strategic Objective 5: To increase WANEP’s research capacity towards supporting policy advocacy, providing knowledge products for effective decision making and leveraging partnerships - Strategic Objective 6: To strengthen WANEP’s institutional capacity and that of its member organisations to deliver on their mandate
