Overall, TNH has a very relevant role in the sector and beyond in delivering high quality journalism on a broad array of humanitarian issues. In 2023, TNH increased its output by 30 percent and doubled its investigations. The organisation's social media presence continued to expand, with a total of 269,562 followers across platforms. The audience on LinkedIn grew and the organisation's videos were viewed 825,630 times across all platforms. On its website, the organisation attracted more than 175,000 visitors per month on average. Podcast downloads increased by 11 percent from 2022, reaching 162,857 in 2023. Additionally, the organisation's staff participated in more than 40 events worldwide. TNH also hosted 11 in-person and online events, focusing on aid financing, refugee inclusion, and Western media coverage of the conflict in Gaza. TNH reached more than 1,000 attendees per event, on average. In 2023, the organisation further invested in decolonisation and diversified the voices in its journalism. Almost half of its freelance contributors were nationals of the countries from which they reported, and more than half of the guests on its podcasts and speakers at its events were from the Global South. TNH added more staff with ties to and perspectives from the Global South to its editorial team. TNH expanded events, staff consultations, workshops, and coaching. TNH hired its first Senior Editor for Inclusive Storytelling, launched a Humanitarian Storytelling Fellowship for journalists from the Global South, and created a tool for other media to republish its work, and expanded its newsletter and podcast offering. In 2023, TNH covered a range of critical topics, including conflicts in Ukraine, Gaza, Myanmar, Ethiopia, Western Sahara. It examined drought and floods across the Horn of Africa, food insecurity from the Philippines to Argentina, displacement in Burkina Faso and South Sudan, and earthquakes and floods in Morocco, Afghanistan, and Libya. TNH articles covered US and European Union (EU) migration policies, violence in Haiti and the DRC and many other humanitarian crises and themes worldwide. TNH helped shed light on abuses, mismanagement and ongoing challenges in the sector, having investigated and published articles on such issues in Nigeria to Sudan, Syria and Tigray. This line of accountability reporting also pointe to inadequate and delayed response of the World Health Organization (WHO) to address sexual abuse complaints, calling the support offered too little too late.
More effective and accountable humanitarian action to improve the lives of people affected by crises. På svenska: Mer effektivt och mer ansvarstagande humanitärt bistånd som förbättrar krisdrabbade människors liv.
