Result
The agreement between Sida and the Public Health Agency of Sweden (PHAS) was signed mid 2019. The Covid-19 pandemic made it very difficult for this intervention to move forward at a good pace from March 2020. Having said that some examples of results that have been achieved, includes: The overarching results of the development intervention has been to enable a new institution to take form in Somalia, namely the National Institute of Health (NIH) Somalia. NIH has it's independent Board of Directors, it is semi-autonomous from the Federal Ministry of Health and has a clear mandate to: "To ensure effective prevention, detection, preparedness and response to outbreaks and other public health emergencies to achieve universal health coverage and in line with the Sustainable Development Goals, Agenda 2030 and the African Union Agenda 2063. NIH will seek to become an outstanding health institution that improves the health of the Somali people through innovative integration of research, Surveillance, training, and prevention as well as control of diseases to achieve the highest quality of life and equity in the health sector in Somalia." (https://nih.gov.so/nih-somalia-mandates/) FHM has continued its collaboration and strenthening of the NIH during the last year. Prior to October 2023, the two agencies held bi-weekly meetings and discussed results, plans and activities. In the last year FHM also supported the running of the first Field Epidemiology Training Program in Somaliland. Another training of new cohorts recently took place.
The overall objective of the intervention will contribute to strengthening the Somali health system and its capacity to prevent and mitigate further deterioration of the health of the Somali population. The specific objectives of the proposed intervention are: - Strengthen the capacity of NIH Somalia to work with public health. - Enhance the capacity of NIH Somalia with the purpose of strengthening the practice of public health, ensuring and improving the health of people in Somalia.
