Below follows a very brief selection of main achievements and programmatic highlights, that support from Sida has contributed to during the agreement period of January 2018 - June 2023. As achievments span over two strategy periods the results below are divided in three areas that corresponds to both strategies by areas of work rather than per objective; 1. KNOWLEDGE GENERATION: CIVICUS continues to produce and disseminate information on, and monitor civic space and helps legitimise action: SIDA core funding has enabled CIVICUS to invest resources in the two flagship reports produced annually; the State of Civil Society Report and People Power Under Attack report. It also provided a foundation to expand the depth and reach of the knowledge products CIVICUS Lens and CIVICUS Monitor. These products allow CIVICUS to generate timely knowledge and analyses on civil society actions in relation to civic and democratic space. CIVICUS assess that the quantity and quality of the reports provide CIVICUS opportunities to center public discourse on civic space and the impacts of civil society action, placing the need to defend and support civil society higher on the policy and political agenda. The CIVICUS Lens was initiated in January 2022. Its an online platform where interviews with civil society activists, leaders and experts are featured, providing timely analysis of civil society issues and trends from a civil society perspective. 2. TARGETED ADVOCACY: Setting norms about civic space at the UN on the Right to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly: CIVICUS has UN hubs in both New York and Geneva. SIDA core funding mainly supported the UN hub in Geneva and, for example, contributed to supporting the United Nations Human Rights Committee in crafting General Comment 37 (GC37) on the right to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly. The adopted comment details of the Right of Peaceful Assembly empowers civil society to practice this right and monitor compliance by states. This was the result of 10 years of advocacy, now followed by efforts to disseminate and an put it into practice through the Vuka! Know your rights Handbook, an initiative to raise awareness and provide practical guidance to civil society actors that is available in several languages. 3. SOLIDARITY: Release and/or acquittal of arbitrarily imprisoned civil society activists: Supporting civil society, organisations and activists, in countries with deteriorating civic space remains fraught with challenges, especially in relation to ensuring the safety and security of all parties. SIDA core funding has enabled CIVICUS to invest resources towards targeted advocacy for releasing arbitrarily imprisoned civil society activists through the #StandAsMyWitness (#SAMW) campaign, first launched on Nelson Mandela Day in 2020. #SAMW builds partnerships and amplifies voices calling for the release of unjustly imprisoned civil society activists. The campaign works closely with family members, colleagues and lawyers of the profiled activist, who keep the campaign team updated with relevant dates, events and advocacy opportunities. However, campaigns continue also after the release and/or acquittals. For example this year, two of the defenders released were shot dead in broad daylight. In response, more than 100 human rights organisations including CIVICUS called for compliance with international obligations to guarantee access to justice and measures of non-repetition. Other examples are the accompaniment of activists during legal proceedings and associated campaigning and linking up released activists with groups that provide psycho-social support.
