It primarily works with solar energy, biofuel, improved stoves and income generating activities based on energy such as small enterprise (refridgeration, radio, minor transformation etc) and more subsistence type activities like vegetable gardens using solar powered water pumps. GERES is also assuming the overall coordination of international NGOs in Mali.\n\nThe programme aims to contribute primarily to SDG 7: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all and SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all, but also contributes, among others, to SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls and SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.\n\nThe programme is aligned with relevant international, regional and national policies. Approx. 72 MWh\u002Fyear for irrigation\nsystems benefiting 450 producers (majority women).\n\nHowever, the installation of VSE (Very Small Enterprises) in the ZAE was\nscheduled for early 2025, meaning that measurable productive energy use and\nenterprise turnover were not yet available at project closure.\n\nThe ZAE consist of bioclimatic commercial buildings constructed using the\nNubian vault technique (traditional architectural technique), designed to host 55\nmicro and small enterprises (VSE) in the target municipalities. Each ZAE is\nequipped with a hybrid solar power system, providing approximately 95%\nrenewable energy, with the remaining 5% supplied by backup generators. The\ngenerators will be equipped with a dual fuel kit that allows them to run on pure\njatropha oil, a locally produced vegetable oil. This energy mix ensures stable,\nhighquality electricity available 24\u002F7 for productive users. The ZAE sites are also\nequipped with fire prevention systems, waste management facilities, and access\nto drinking water.\n\nEnterprise Development\nA total of 55 enterprises (of which 14 are led by women) were identified and\nselected across the five ZAE, with particular attention given to economic viability,\nlocal demand and the potential for productive use of energy. These enterprises\noperate in sectors such as agroprocessing, smallscale manufacturing, services\nand other local valueadding activities linked to rural markets.\nThe selected enterprises received business development support, including the\npreparation of business plans, training in business management and financial\nliteracy, and support to strengthen their organisational and technical capacities.\nIn addition, the project continued to support enterprises from the first phase\n(AEDTT1) through training and followup activities aimed at improving their economic performance and access to finance. The final verdict of this\ncomponent will however be collected and assessed within EUs activity period.\n\nGovernance, Climate and Social Impact\nGovernance committees were created to support the management and\ncoordination of the ZAE and PM, while community sensitisation activities were\ncarried out to raise awareness of renewable energy and climaterelated issues.\nThe project also promoted several lowcarbon initiatives, including improved\ncookstoves, agroecological practices and reforestation activities. In total, 285\npeople were sensitised, including local leaders, 114 women were trained in the\nconstruction of improved cookstoves, and 1,270 improved stoves were\nproduced. In addition, 50 young people received training in reforestation\ntechniques, and local governance structures were established and became\noperational, contributing to increased local ownership and engagement around\nenergy transition and sustainable development.\n\nThe project also established governance and operational structures intended to\nensure the longterm functioning of the ZAEs. Green Biz Africa (GBA) was set up\nas the operational entity responsible for managing the zones, including energy\nproduction and distribution, infrastructure maintenance and service provision to\nenterprises. Its business model is based on cost recovery through user fees and\nenergy tariffs, with the objective of gradually reaching financial sustainability as\neconomic activity increases. It is extremely difficult to predict but if successful it\nmight be sustainable in 1520 years at the earliest. In parallel, Local Monitoring\nCommittees (CLS  Comités Locaux de Suivi) were created in each municipality\nto strengthen local ownership and oversight. These committees bring together\nrepresentatives from local authorities, civil society and community stakeholders\nto support coordination, transparency and integration of the ZAE into local\ndevelopment dynamics. These two structures are outcomes from earlier stages\nof the ZAE development.\n\nSynergies\nThere are, to some extent, synergies with other Swedishsupported partners\nsuch as GOGLA (Global association for the OffGrid solar energy industry) and\nAECF (Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund). They are all active actors within their\nrespective domains and mandates, working at the intersection of privatesector\ndevelopment and renewable energy production. An example of synergy is a\nround table of stakeholders organised by FENEM (Federation of Electricity,\nEnergy, Renewable and New Energies) held in June 2023 on the theme\nSustainable Energy in Mali:
