The project proposal is entitled: Strengthening human rights and peace research and education in ASEAN \u002F Southeast Asia (SHAPE-SEA): Funding proposal for program phase 2 (July 2021-December 2024). The SHAPE-SEA research network and its activities will be implemented regionally in Southeast Asia, with a special focus on Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and East Timor, where the research capacity for peace and human rights studies is assessed to require further support.\n\nThe SHAPE-SEA Phase 2 contribution will build upon the results achieved during SHAPE-SEA phase 1 (2015 - 2021). The Sida grant will enable the SHAPE-SEA Secretariat at Mahidol University to strengthen research capacity amongst Southeast Asian peace and human rights researchers, and to strengthen respect for academic freedom in Southeast Asia. The grant will also support Southeast Asian peace and human rights researchers to 1) produce new knowledge, 2) engage with regional and national stakeholders to implement research results,  and 3) contribute to public human rights discourses. and peace in Southeast Asia. \n\nResearch scholarships will be awarded to researchers in the region to carry out research projects that study local, national and cross-border research issues related to peace and human rights. The research results and research capacity generated by the initiative will contribute to improved conditions for fair and sustainable development that is inclusive of vulnerable and marginalized groups in Southeast Asia. \n\nThe total budget of the contribution during July 2021 - December 2024 is 16,6 million SEK. Scholarship grantees were equipped with research skills and enhanced knowledge to address human rights and peace\u002Fconflict issues of relevance to their local, national and regional concerns. Participants were from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, of which 57.7% were women. The participant composition based on degree was 19.2% with PhD, 69.2% with masters degree and 11.5% bachelors degree. Many of the participants came from underrepresented universities and remote areas of Southeast Asia and the Mekong subregion.\n\nA Research Grant Programme (RGP) capacity training to the 15 new scholarship grantees enrolled in 2024 were organized in August 2024 to equip their research skills and enhance knowledge to address human rights and peace\u002Fconflict issues of relevance to their local, national and regional context. The scholarship grantees were selected from an application review process of 120 applicants. The 15 research grantees were selected across multiple disciplines and 8 Southeast Asian countries (Philippines, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam).\n\nii) Knowledge Production\nThis program component aims at developing collaborative projects across Southeast Asia academic institutions and disciplines grants scheme support context specific and transformative research on human rights and peace and incorporating innovative, intersectional approaches to research themes. The 2024 Research Grant Program (RGP) was launched with 15 new scholarship grantees. The themes most covered by their research projects are related to gender & sexuality, peace & conflict, cultures, values and identities, environment justice & conflicts, food security and land ownership, indigenous livelihoods, labour rights.\n\nSHAPE-SEA also conducted research visits during 2024 to provide technical and substantive support to its researchers. These visits took place in Mindanao in the Philippines (January), Yogyakarta in Indonesia (February), and Hanoi in Vietnam (June). These face to face engagements helped foster direct interactions with Grantees, enabling real-time\nfeedback and tailored support for each research projects, and collaboration with local institutions and university students with seminars to promote the RGP opportunities to them.\n\niii) Knowledge Dissemination\nThe 6th Southeast Asian Human Rights Network (SEAHRN) International Conference organized by SHAPE-SEA during 13-14 August 2024 was the most prominent activity in knowledge dissemination of the year. The main theme of the conference was on Peace and Human Rights in Southeast Asia in the Context of Contemporary Global Crises, which brought together 193 participants (152 onsite) including academics, researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, CSOs, and government representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and India, Japan, Taiwan and others. Intersecting topics discussed and presented at the conference were related to Global\ngovernance & democracy, human rights and rule of law, global health and human rights, women, peace and security, climate& business and human rights gender and sexuality, marginalized groups, environmental conflict and rights. Other parallel panels were dealt with such as China Investment on Nickel Mining Industries in Indonesia (DRC compared), Peace & Conflict in Southern Thailand, and Peace Promotion in Myanmar.\n\nSHAPE-SEA's flagship Human Rights Outlook in Southeast Asia 2023 was launched on 11 December 2024 at Mahidol University. The publication was unveiled during a public panel discussing the regions progress and challenges in upholding the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This launch served as a key highlight in commemorating International Human Rights Day. The topics highlighted in this Southeast Asia Human Rights Outlook cover: Civil and Political Rights, Economic, Social and Cultural rights Academic freedom Vulnerable and Marginalized Groups Migration and Refugee Rights, Human Rights Violation, Gender, Environmental and Climate Rights. The outlook is assessed by its stakeholders and researchers to have of impact and usefulness for academic research, policy development, advocacy and teaching materials relevant to\nSoutheast Asian
